Circle Time

Review – Start your preschool day with Circle Time and sing the “I Can Sit Down” song (Improvise your tune)

Look at the calendar and sing the “Days of the Week” song. (Tune of the “Adams Family”)

                                                there’s Thursday and there’s Friday and then there’s Saturday.
                                                Days of the week. (Clap hands 2 times).

This is a great time to review the days of the week, months of the year and the number of the day. Then check the weather and compare it to your weather dial.

Discussion: Parts of a Plant

Discuss the different parts of a plant: roots, stem, branch, leaves, flowers, etc. Draw a plant on a big piece of paper and label the different parts for the children to observe. Explain the process called “photosynthesis”: the process in which the plant absorbs sunlight to turn dirty air (carbon dioxide) and releases clean air (oxygen). Photosynthesis is the process of how plants eat.

Here is a neat website that goes over the parts of a plant for you to gather information from to be able to teach to your children.

Now with Miss. Cullen we are going to sing: I Plant a Seed

Skills

  • Language: Children are learning new vocabulary as they are learning about the different parts of a plant
  • Cognitive: Learning the concept of a plant and remembering the parts and names of the plant
  • Social: Children are working on their social skills when they interact with other children and adults.

Materials

    • Paper with a big plant on it
    • Pen (To label the parts of a plant)
    • Singing voices

Music & Movement

I plant a little seed in the cold cold ground
(Have one hand flat like dirt, while using your pointer finger as the seed going down to the dirt)
Out comes the yellow sun big and round
(Bring hands together to make a circle; move the sun from one side to the other)
Down come the raindrops soft and slow
(Have fingers wiggling down like rain drops)
Up comes the flower grow grow grow
(Have pointer finger moving upward)

Letters & Numbers

Activity Description - Numbers: Number 9

Watch this video to get an idea of what you can have children glue onto the outline of the number 9. You can print out the number 9 pattern here and gather some seeds to glue onto the number nine. This video talks about the number 2 but we are going to change it to the number 9 since that is the number of our week.

Skills

  • Math & Counting: When children are gluing seeds onto the number nine they can count them out and work on rote counting and number recognition with the number of the week
  • Language: Increasing vocabulary
  • Physical: Children are working on their fine motor skills and strengthening the muscles in their hands when they are using their grasping fingers to pick up the seeds and when they are squeezing the bottle of glue.

This is a wonderful way to share with children what the Bible says about the death and resurrection of Jesus. You can also use a children’s Bible, books and pictures to help tell the story. I love how these eggs bring this amazing story to life, so let’s crack open an egg and learn about the Easter story together! Activity Description - Art: Marble Painting the Earth

With Earth Day is April 22 let’s talk about ways we can take care of our earth, the place we live. It would be a good idea to show children a picture of the earth, talk about what lives on the earth and how we can take care of it. This video Marble Painting Earth video is really old but I think you will get the idea of it, If you have any questions though please email me. Here is the earth pattern for you to use to marble paint on. You can have children cut this out. It may not be a circle when they get done with cutting but that’s okay, it’s all about the skills they are working on to cut it out.

Discussion: Recycling

Discuss what recycling is and what kinds of things you can recycle. Explain to the children that recycling means taking materials that have been thrown away and making a new item from them. Tell the children that all kinds of materials can be recycled like paper, glass, cardboard, aluminum cans, and even plastic bottles. From these old items new things can be made from them like playground equipment, water bottles and even skyscrapers.

  • Cognitive: Learning the concept and understanding specifics about recycling
  • Social: Children are working on their social skills when they interact with other children and adults

Materials

    • Print photos of what can be recycled and what can be made out of recycled material

Activity Description - Art: Recycling Collage

Look around your home or classroom and find many things that can be recycled and put them out in the middle of the table. You can give children a piece of paper to glue their items onto or you can just allow them to glue different items together. I love giving children the freedom to take different objects and put them together to make their own creation.

Skills

  • Math & Counting: Color recognition with the colors of objects being used
  • Physical: Fine motor skills that strengthen the muscles in their hands when picking up the items to glue together
  • Fine motor skills when using scissors to cut with and when squeezing the bottle of glue
  • Social: A lot of times children will be talking and interacting with one another during a project like this

Discussion: 3 R's

Today we are going to talk about the 3 R’s. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Review once again on recycle; tell the children that instead of throwing something away have them think of ways to reuse it so it doesn’t end up in landfills. Reuse means to use an item for another purpose. For example, if you have an old t-shirt and think of throwing it away instead take pieces of the fabric combined with other old clothes and make a quilt out of them. Reduce means to try and use and take only what you need. For example if you were going to do art and glue pieces of paper; you should only take enough paper that you will use in order to not waste and have to throw away extra paper.

This is a cute video to watch with your children with a catchy Jack Johnson tune all about The Three R’s. If you wanted, you could show the children what the letter R looks like.

Numbering strings are fun to do with children to work on number recognition. Make sure to recognize when the say the number nine to reinforce the number of the week.

  • Physical: Fine motor skills and strengthening the muscles in their hands when using their grasping fingers to pick up the object and stringing it onto the pipe cleaner

  • String, yarn, wire, tape, marker to write the number on the tape, Cheerios or beads, something with a hole in the middle

Activity Description - Art: Milk Carton Bird House

Take an old milk carton that had been cleaned out and cut two openings on opposite sides of the clean carton. Now allow your child paint the birdhouse with nontoxic paint however they would like. Once the house has dried you can help your child add a perch by poking holes below the openings and slip a dowel through the holes. Fill the bottom of the feeder with birdseed or your very own mixture of nuts, corn and sunflower seeds. Then take string and hang the birdhouse.
