This is a great time to review the days of the week, months of the year and the number of the day. Then check the weather and compare it to your weather dial.

Discussion: Shape Dancing

Dancing around shapes is a great way to introduce shapes to children. Lay out a bunch of different shapes inside or outside. You can cut them out of colored construction paper or cut them out of white paper and have children help to color them; each shape being a different color. Now find some fun dancing music. Play the music and the children will dance around the shapes. Then pause the music and the children find a shape to stand on. When they stand on the shape have them call out the shape they are on and even the color of the shape as well.

Skills

  • shape recognition
  • color recognition
  • body-space awareness
  • large motor skills

Materials

  • shapes, construction paper, crayons, scissors, music

Letters & Numbers

Activity Description - Letters: Letter S with Food Series

Learn about the letter S with Miss Cullen and Gator. First, Miss Cullen and Gator are going to show the upper and lower case letter S. Then review the sound of the S. Next look at three types of food that start with the letter S: salsa, spinach and salami. If you have these items at home you can try them with Miss Cullen and discuss what it feels like, tastes like, sounds like and smells like.

Remember, when trying the different foods, it has to go in your mouth but it doesn’t have to stay there. But it is always good to try something new.

Skills

  • Letter recognition
  • sound recognition
  • increases language development

Materials

  • Three types of food that start with the letter S. Miss Cullen uses salsa, spinach and salami but feel free to use other food items that start with the letter S. Other food ideas include scampi, seaweed, sausage, shortcake, snails, soy milk, squash and spaghetti.

Activity Description: David & Goliath: Bible Story

For this Bible story I recommend that you read the story, ask the questions and then do the Bible memorization:

David and Goliath
1 Samuel 17

Saul and the army of Israel gathered together. They lined up their men to fight against the Philistines. The Philistine army was camped on one hill. Israel’s army was on one another. The valley was between them. A mighty hero named Goliath came out of the Philistine camp. He was more than nine feet tall. Goliath stood and shouted to the soldiers of Israel. He said, "Why do you come out and line up for battle? I'm a Philistine. You are servants of Saul. Choose one of your men. Have him come down and face me.
Saul and the whole army of Israel heard what the Philistine said. They were terrified.
Every morning and evening Goliath came forward and stood there. He did it for 40 days.
Then David picked up his wooden staff. He went down to a stream and chose five smooth stones. He put them in the pocket of his shepherd's bag. Then he took his sling in his hand and approached Goliath. David said to Goliath, "You are coming to fight against me with a sword, a spear and a javelin. But I'm coming against you in the name of the Lord who rules over all. He is the God of the armies of Israel. He's the one you have dared to fight against.” As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly to the battle line to meet him. He reached into his bag. He took out a stone. He put it in his sling. He slung it at Goliath. The stone hit him on the forehead and sank into it. He fell to the ground on his face. So David won the fight against Goliath with a sling and a stone. He
struck the Philistine down and killed him. He did it without even using a sword.

You can read the story again and whenever you say the name Goliath the children stand on their tip-toes to be tall and when you say the name David they squat down to be short.

Questions after Story:
“Who was in the story?” David and Goliath
“Was Goliath making bad choices?” Bad
“What did David do to Goliath?” He beat him
“How did David defeat Goliath?” With 1 stone and a slingshot

Activity to work on memorizing a Bible verse to go with the story:
So David: put hand out showing someone who isn’t very tall
Won the fight: raise arms above head as though you won something
Against Goliath: put hand out showing someone who is very tall
With a sling: act like you are pulling a sling back
And a stone: hold up 1 finger
1 Samuel 17: hold up ten fingers and then seven fingers
50: hold up five fingers on one hand and make a “0” with the other hand
Do this a few times with the children. Make it fun for them to do the motions and say the words. Involving them in active learning is essential for memorization at this age.

Skills

  • Increasing vocabulary
  • memorization

Art & Science

Activity Description - Art: Bubble Painting with Shapes

I love doing this project with children because it is so fun to watch their faces when the blow through the straws to make the bubbles and to make them really big. They also like to see the bubble print that is left on the paper. It is so neat. This art project is super fun to take pictures of. Make sure to watch the video to get the idea of how to do it and what you will need.  It is great for children to be able to stand up while doing this project or if you don’t have low enough table have them sit on their knees.

Skills

  • Blowing through straws
  • color and shape recognition when the colored bubble prints mix together the colors change

Materials

  • Dish soap, water, non-toxic paint, straws, scissors, bowls or pie tins, shapes cut out of construction paper-the heavier the weight the better, you may want to line the table with paper towels or newspaper to soak up the bubbles that overflow from the bowls when the bubbles are blown. You may want to cut a tiny hole or slit near the top of the straw in case they decide to suck up the the soap mixture then most of it will come out the hole rather than in their mouth. Some may get in their mouth but you can just help them wash it out if it does.
