Talk to the children about how Pirates would live on pirate ships and that is how they would get from place to place. Also, tell the children how pirates would use a compass and map to get to their destination. If you have a compass that you can show your child or a picture of one that would be super (I have one on my iPhone). Talk about how using a compass can help us find our way around difficult to find or travel areas and to use the compass to go North, South, East and West. If you have one you can go on a walk with it. If you Google pirate maps many will come up and you can print them out and ask your children what they see on the map and how they think pirates would use them.

Watch this video and use these directions to make your pirate hook:
Provide the children with a paper cup. Allow your child to decorate their cup however they would like. Next, give your child a piece of construction paper in the shape of a hook (here is a pattern if you'd like to use it) and have your child tape the hook to the bottom of the cup. Or give your child a piece of aluminum foil and have your child crumble it into a hook shape. Once they have a hook shape have them tape the aluminum foil to the bottom of the cup.
