In this activity, Miss Cullen interactively starts the day and introduces the four parts of Circle Time: Special Helper, Calendar, Today’s Weather and the Theme Discussion. You may click the this link or the "Extra Content" button about to watch the video.
After Miss Cullen introduces a part of Circle Time she announces and holds up a “Teacher Helper Time” sign. You should pause the video and lead the class offline through that part of Circle Time. When you are done click play on the video to continue to the next part of Circle Time.
Today we are going to talk all about Spiders! Count the number of legs on a spider with Miss Cullen. Look at a spider web and an anchor line, before discussing how a spider web is made and what the spider silk is used for (examples - nests, webs, catching prey, etc.). David and Goliath
1 Samuel 17:1-15
The Philistines were enemies of God and they wanted to fight the Israelites again. They came to fight King Saul's army. The Philistines had a giant soldier named Goliath. He was more than nine feet tall and wore a helmet and a coat of armor. He carried a sword, spear and javelin. Every day, Goliath shouted at God's people, "Come on. Fight with me!" And Goliath yelled terrible things about God. Then he said, "Bring out your best soldier to fight me!" "If your strongest soldier defeats me, we will be your slaves!" he boombed. The Israelite soldiers were terrified of him. Even their king, Saul, felt afraid. They did not want to fight the giant.
Meanwhile, young David was taking food to his brothers who were in King Saul's army. When David came to the camp, he saw Goliath. David heard the giant's challenge.
"I'm not afraid to fight the giant," said David. King Saul said to David, "You cannot fight the giant. You are too young and small." David said, "God will be with me." King Saul gave his armor to David, but it was to big and heavy. David wasn't used to wearning armor so he took it off.
David didn't wear any armor. He went to a nearby stream and pick up five stones. He stood before Goliath. The giant laughed at him, but David didn't care. David said, "You may come with big weapons to fight us, but I come before you in the name of the Lord who rules over all!" David put a stone in his slingshot, ran toward the giant, aimed at Goliath's head, and fired. It hit Goliath's forehead, and he fell to the ground! The Philistines saw that their hero was dead and they ran away.
God had rescued His people again, this time through David, a slingshot, and a stone. God was with David and is with you too!
David is the Bible superhero in this story because he believed that God was with him and that He would help him. And God was with him and did help him just like He does for you!
Bible Story Questions & Answers
Talk about what the Bible story was about by asking the children questions. You can decide ahead of time how you want them to answer the questions. I like to have the children raise their hand to answer the question. If they are incorrect that is fine. You can say what the answer is or ask: “Does anyone else have a thought or answer to the question?”
Questions to ask if you like:
‧ Were the Philistine's enemies of god and did they want to fight the Israelites? (Yes)
‧ What was the Philistine's giant soldiers name? (Goliath)
‧ How tall was Goliath? (Over 9 feet tall)
‧ Did he want King Saul's Israelite army to fight him? (Yes)
‧ How did King Saul's army feel about Goliath? (They were scared/terrified of him)
‧ Who was bringing food to his brothers that were in King Saul's army? (David)
‧ Why was David not afraid to fight Goliath? (Because he knew God would be with him.)
‧ Why did David decide not to wear King Saul's armor? (Because it was too big and heavy.)
‧ What did David pick up at a nearby stream? (5 Stones)
‧ When David came out to fight Goliath did Goliath laugh at him? (Yes)
‧ Do you remember a little bit of what David said to Goliath? (Some children may not remember all and that is okay. "You may come with big weapons to fight us, but I come before you in the name of the Lord who rules over all!"
‧ What did David put in his slingshot when he ran toward Goliath?
‧ (A stone)
Prayer
While sitting on the floor with criss cross legs, have the children repeat after you. You can have them fold their hands and close their eyes or just sit quietly and say after you. Following is a prayer written out that you can use, or you can make up your own.
Dear God
(children repeat)
Thank you for this day
(children repeat)
Please help me to trust you (children repeat)
like David did.
(children repeat)
Please help me to believe (children repeat)
that you will help me
(children repeat)
at all times. (children repeat)
I love you (children repeat)
Amen

Miss Cullen announces it is “Art Time” and holds up the “Teacher Helper Time” sign. At this time you stop the video then lead the class offline through an art project related to today's weather theme. Remember to check the prep video first to learn what materials you will need! Click here to watch a video on how to lead Art & Science Activities!
Make a spider web out of construction paper and paint with your child. Start with a piece of black construction paper and cut out the shape of a spider web. Stick the black cut out with tape on the bottom of a box. Spread the paint into a little dish and let your child roll the balls in the paint. Transfer the balls to box and let your child shake the box. This will transfer the paint from the balls onto the paper creating a spider web design.
If you are worried that the balls will jump out of the box, you might want to do this activity outside, get a box with higher sides or cover the box with a see through lid before letting your child shake it. Click here or click "prep video" above to watch my video on Spider Web painting!
Note, you have the flexibility to do a different art activity rather than the suggested idea.
