Down on the Farm Day 3

Today for art we are making paper doll scarecrows. You can click here for the scarecrow pattern to print out and cut out. I would cut out each item in different colors of construction paper and lay out for the children to choose how they want to dress their scarecrow. You could also have out buttons to glue on, scraps of fabric for patches cut into squares often seen on scarecrows, hay or raffia, and markers to draw on a face.

Chat about the purpose of a scarecrow in a field or crop area and show them some pictures of different scarecrows. Scarecrows are made to look like a person dressed in old clothes and are place in fields by farmers. When the wind blows it looks like a person moving and so any birds, crows or sparrows trying to eat the crops will be scared by the movement of the scarecrow and fly away.
