This is a great time to review the days of the week, months of the year and the number of the day. Then check the weather and compare it to your weather dial.

Discussion: The 4 Seasons

To kick off our week we are going to learn about the four seasons with our weather bear. The season we can focus on is Winter because this week we will learn about what the weather is outside, what to wear in cold weather, where Eskimos live and have fun playing with ice. Click here for the Weather Bear video.

Extra Content:
It may be fun to watch this video and then sing it with your child What’s the weather like today? You could also talk about what clothes you would wear if you were going outside to play today.

Worship Time

Activity Description: Jesus Chooses His Disciples Story, Questions, Prayer

Today we are going to learn about Jesus choosing his disciples and that we are disciples of Jesus’ also. Below you will find the story that you can read to the children, then some questions to ask and a prayer at the end. For the prayer I have put in periods where you can pause to have the children repeat after you.

Story: Jesus Chooses His Disciples
Jesus began to tell people about God. He knew he had a lot of work to do, and he went to find some helpers. As Jesus was walking along the seashore, he saw some fishermen. Jesus called to them, “Come. Follow me. I will make you fishers of people.” Right away, they left their boats and followed Jesus. Their names were Peter, Andrew, James and John. Later, Jesus met a tax collector named Matthew. His job was to get the tax money from the people and give it to the king. Matthew quit his job to follow Jesus, too. Jesus chose some more people. Their names were Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, and another man named James. Thaddaeus, Simon and Judas joined them, too. Jesus now had twelve new followers. He called them his disciples. Jesus taught them about God’s love.

Questions:

1. What did Jesus say to the men he asked to follow him? Come follow me I will make you fishers of people.

2. Did the men stop what they were doing and follow him? Yes

3. How many disciples did Jesus have to follow him? 12

4. What did Jesus teach them? About God’s love

Prayer:
Dear God. Thank you for this day. Please help me. to follow after you. Please help me. to be kind and loving to others. I love you. Amen.

Skills

  • Listening
  • Learning new vocabulary

Materials

  • A children’s Bible if you’d like or you can read the story in the text I have written out for you.

Art & Science

Activity Description - Art: Mittens

We have been learning about the clothing to wear in the winter time. On our hands we need to wear mittens to keep them warm. We are going to make mittens (out of construction paper) and decorate them. Click here to watch the video. Click here for the mitten pattern.

Extra Content:
Read The Mitten by Jan Brett with your child. This is such a cute book that you should be able to find at the library if you do not have it at home or in your classroom. Jan Brett also has a greatwebsite where you can print out the animals in from the story for free. I have printed out these animals and attached a Popsicle stick to each one and used them as puppets. I have also passed them out to the children and when we come to that animal then they bring the animal up and put it in a basket. This is great for children to work on listening to the story and paying attention to the sequence of the story.

Skills

  • Small motor skills strengthening the muscles in their hands when squeezing the glue bottle and when picking things up with their fingers to place onto the mitten.

Materials

  • Mitten’s cut out of construction paper-you can use any color that you’d like

  • Glue
  • Items to glue onto the mittens

Discussion: Eskimos

I thought it would be fun to learn about Eskimos today. I have found a few sites that have some information and pictures about Eskimos. Here is one of the sites.  There is some great information onWikipedia but you will have to pull from it what you think your children will be interested in as there is a LOT of information.  You may want to have a piece of paper handy and ask the children what they know or have learned about Eskimos and write down what they say. Also find a map to show where Eskimos live and where you live.

Skills

  • Listening
  • Learning new vocabulary and new information
  • Sharing their thoughts.

Materials

  • A place to look up information and pictures on
  • Piece of paper and writing utensil
  • Map of where Eskimos live and where you live.

Activity Description - Letters: Letter Ii

We are learning about the letter Ii this week so I thought it would be fun to make igloos out of sugar cubes. Does the word igloo start with the letter I? Yep it does. Make sure you talk to the children about the sound the letter I makes, other words that start with the letter I and that igloo starts with the letter I. Take a look at this video to see how you to go about making the igloos.

Skills

  • Using imagination at building an igloo
  • Small motor skills strengthening the muscles in their hands when picking up the sugar cubes and when squeezing the bottle of glue
  • Learning about the letter I and the sound it makes.

Materials

  • Wax paper, construction paper or some kind of paper to put down to build the igloo on
  • Glue
  • Sugar cubes.

Activity Description: Bible Key Point Coloring Page | Jesus Chooses His Disciples

This week we are learning about Jesus choosing his disciples and it has been fun to learn about the people that Jesus chose to follow Him. On day 1 we read the story, answered some questions and prayed. Today we will color a picture and learn a Bible verse. On Day 3 we will dress up and follow Jesus. Click here to find the coloring page and print it out. Please know that it is okay for children to color their picture however they want. It is okay to color inside or outside of the lines. Children are developing their small motor skills and strengthening the muscles in their hands whether they are coloring inside or outside of the lines. You can read the story to them while they are coloring if you’d like. See Day 1 for the story. Whatever way they can soak up Jesus is a great way :).

Music and Movement:
Here is a cute song to sing to help children remember how many disciples Jesus chose to follow him.

Discussion: Ice Fun

Let’s have a fun day learning about ice! You can look up some information on how ice is made but I have to tell you I looked and there was information but not something very simple for children to understand. If you find something please let me know :). Here is a bit of information:

1. The existence of water is essential for life on Earth and it covers around 70% of the Earth’s surface.

2. Water has three different states, liquid, solid and gas.

3. The word water usually refers to water in its liquid state. The solid state of water is known as ice while the gas state of water is known as steam or water vapor.

As much as information is great and it’s great to know the facts, it’s also wonderful to be hands on as

Skills

  • Learning about ice and the reaction it has when it touches something warm (their little hands).

Materials

  • If you’d like to find more information on ice you will need to look that up
  • Ice

Letters & Numbers

Activity Description - Letters: Letter Ii

Let’s paint with Ice cubes for the letter Ii! Click here for the letter upper case letter I and click here for lower case letter i. Click here to watch the video so that you know what you will need, how to make it and what to do.

Skills

  • Working on some of the 5 senses with the sense of touch, sight, feel
  • Color recognition with the color of the ice cubes
  • Following directions
  • Letter and sound recognition

Materials

  • Ice Cubes with food coloring
  • Ice Cube trays
  • Letter I-I would recommend cutting it out of construction paper or even something heavier because when children start rubbing the ice cubes on the paper it is easy to get a hole in the paper.

Worship Time

Activity Description: Jesus Chooses His Disciples

Today’s worship involves some role playing. Here is a great idea from Ministry to Children to have the children dress up as characters from the story. You can keep it simple with dressing up and use blankets or sheets to wrap around their bodies.

Here is what you can say to the children from Ministry to Children: I have a special surprise for everyone! Each of you are going to receive a Bible times outfit. In today’s lesson from the book of Mark (hold up your Bible, showing them the book), we are going to learn about how Jesus called men to follow Him. He calls each of us to follow Him too! We will put on our outfits and pretend we were one of His followers while He was here on Earth. We can pretend we are hearing Jesus teach just like His followers heard Him teach. Are you ready to follow Jesus through the book of Mark?

(Pass out an outfit to each child.)  Here is the story if you’d like to read it here:

Music and Movement: There is a song I Caught a Fish which I thought would be fun to sing just because of Peter, Andrew, James and John were fishermen, also there is a Math Fishing Game to play under Games and Play. Just some extra ideas to add to the Worship if you’d like.

Skills

  • Listening
  • Following directions

Materials

  • If you’d like to have the children dress up then you will need blankets or sheets or clothes that are bigger than they are.
